Research: Film Openings - 9 Frames Title Sequence Analysis (Maria)

Institutional Analysis: Iron Man 3 (Black, 2013)

The opening title sequence to a film is to reveals the genre, plot, some characters, an atmosphere and some settings that will be involved in the rest of the film. Iron Man 3 meets this criteria as shown below.

What i have learnt from my institutional Analysis:

• For this film there were around 18 cast members mentioned during the credits.
• The director and producer were mentioned right at the beginning for the opening (5 seconds in) and the Title of the film is almost towards the indicating the film is about to begin.
• In the background of the credits we see snippets of the action the film will contain that entice us to this thriller such as main elements like the iron man suit and explosions.
• We also see an introduction of the main characters.
• The sound we hear is non-diegetic music that fades in, is very dramatic to set the atmosphere of action and then fades out towards the end. It is also in time with the credits and action shots.

Institutional Analysis- Iron Man

I made a timeline for the title sequence of Iron Man, which includes the titles and shows what time they appear and also an audio line showing the music/sounds used throughout the sequence. The opening title to a film is to reveal the genre, plot, some of the main characters, to create an atmosphere and some settings that will be involved in the rest of the film and Iron Man meets this criteria. 

What i have learnt from my institutional Analysis:

• For this film the main actor was shown right at the beginning and the director John Favreau, 6 seconds after the main actor was shown. 
• Within the 21 seconds into the opening, there was the names of the producer, executive producer and the director of the film and the director of photography was mentioned. 
• In the background of the credits there was images of the action shown that the film will contain, for example explosions and etc. 
• The soundtrack that plays in the background creates a very dramatic atmosphere for the audience and it fades out in the end when the action fades out as well.

Institutional Analysis: Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs (Miller, 2009)

The opening title sequence to a film does not reveal too much but outlines the genre, plot, introduces some characters, sets the scene and creates an initial atmosphere. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs meets this criteria as shown below.

What i have learnt from my institutional Analysis:

• From the opening the audience has a clear idea that this is not a film based on reality due to the animation and buildings made from food.
• The choice of setting and music implies the target audience is young children.
• For this film there were around 18 cast members mentioned during the credits.
• The title of the film appears towards the end indicating the film is about to begin.
• Each credit appears in a unique artistic way, which each credit we are shown a new location in the film.
• The upbeat loud music continues throughout the opening although with the bright colours flashing onto the screen suggesting it is a light-hearted watch.

Institutional Analysis: Ping Pong Summer

The opening title sequence to a film is to reveal the genre, plot, an atmosphere and perhaps some settings that will be involved in the rest of the film. Ping Pong Summer meets this criteria, so as a result the opening is viewed in the film industry as a success.

• From my institutional analysis I have learnt that the name of the director typically comes at the end of the opening sequence.
• For this specific film there are 28 credits that appear on screen throughout.
• The same soundtrack continues during the opening. 
• However, unlike most other film openings, we do not get an introduction to any characters.
• The non-diegetic music creates an upbeat atmosphere, suggesting its genre.
