How does your media product represent particular social groups?
FIRST CHARACTER INTRODUCED
Protagonist - 'UNHINGED’
The first character to be seen is our Protagonist as for the opening scene we didn’t want to show the Antagonist immediately as it straight away gives away that the character is being watched, we aimed to keep the audience guessing for a short while.
- Teenage blonde girl connotations: innocent, naïve, sweet, clueless
Also, it is noticeable that most 'damsel in distress characters' will predominately be played actresses with blonde hair. For example:
Our characters is a typical teenage girl...
Since our protagonist is a white teenage female, it adds that sense of innocence and vulnerability. Also, she is styled in trendy clothes, which are worn by most females her age, showing she is your average girl next door. The costume conforms to the stereotype and emphasises her as being young, and pretty female protagonist, similar to the character shown below.
SECOND CHARACTER INTRODUCED
Antagonist - 'UNHINGED’
Black Hoodie - connotations: teenager, fear, youth, trouble, danger
The camera angel is shot from the perspective of the villain, creating a discomfort and uneasy feeling among the audience as they see the protagonist through the eyes of the antagonist, as if it is the audience themselves following the victim.
The face of the antagonist is never revealed, this adds a sense of mystery to the plot, which intrigues the audience and makes them watch to continue watching until the identity of the villain is revealed, this also conforms to a thriller genre.
Comparison to a real film -

WOMAN IN BLACK - wears black clothing, hiding her identity. |
When choosing our antagonist we opted to challenge the stereotype of a male villain creepily stalking an innocent, young teenage victim. Having a female antagonist is something different, not what the audience would be accepting from a stalker thriller film. Also, for our plot we thought it would be more interesting to have a girl antagonist that is jealous of the protagonist, this often happens girls all across the world, which means it can be relatable. However, the jealousy of this female may have started to go a little too far.
Similarity 1 – The Grudge
- I feel these two characters are similar to some degree as they both have very pale skin and gripping eyes making the audience feel tense when looking at them.
- Both characters create enigma. Who are they?; What are they doing?; What is going to happen next?
Similarity 2 - Now You See Me
- Both characters faces are hidden which suggests mystery and a sense of the unknown and creates suspension and fear among the audience.
- Both characters appear to be watching someone.
