Evaluation Activity 4 (Jodie - 4406)

Evaluation Activity 4

Who Would Be The Audience For Your Media Product?

A target audience is a particular group at which a product such as a film or advertisement is aimed. After research we found that a suitable audience for our thriller would be 15 - 25 year olds, as we feel that it may be daunting for younger people but it is does not contain enough stronger images to be classed as an 18.

In addition to my research I conducted a survey, where I asked several people what their favourite film was; this was in order to see if our chosen audience would be interested in our thriller film idea.

The results support our view that our age bracket more benefit most by being 15 - 25 year olds; as most older people said their choice of film would be action/comedy/horror and most younger people said they would prefer the thriller genre. Also, the gender variation is relatively equal, which means we can appeal to both genders.

Finalising Age Rating
During previous research we looked into whether our thriller would fall into the certificate of rating 18 or 15. After research we saw that our film was clearly a 15 rating, due to the fact that it did not contain lots of violent, bad language or offensive scenes that would cause it be to an 18 certificate.
Age Rating: 15

How have we targeted our audience?

When researching into our target audience we interviewed teenagers of both genders and asked they what they expected and enjoyed when watching thrillers.
Elements that were liked by Patson were: they are interesting, keeps him guessing, creates tension throughout, keeps him invested in the film and on the edge of his seat.
Elements that Jodie enjoyed included: good at building suspense, unexpected, creates tension, big climax at the end and mysterious.

After hearing this feedback and taking into accounts the participants  opinions
we made sure our thriller opening included:
- Loud music that builds tension
- Sound effects to add suspense
- Shocking climax at the end
- Disturbing events
- Feeling of the unknown
- Relatable protagonist

AUDIENCE EXAMPLE - 18 year old Female

AUDIENCE EXAMPLE - 21 year old Male

These stereotypical examples of boys and girls conform to our target audience, as they are within the age range of 15 - 20. Furthermore, our protagonist is based on the stereotype of a young, blonde and innocent victim, this will attract the audience because they can relate and feel elements of fear for her.

Comparison 1:
Here our protagonist has just received an anonymous letter
Here Casey receives an anonymous phone-call

When comparing our opening to other films we noticed there was a similarity between 'UNHINGED' and 'Scream'; in both openings the protagonists accustom a message from an unknown identity that causes them to be alarmed and fearful of the situation.

Comparison 2:

Tris - Divergent
Antagonist - UNHINGED
The main character in Divergent is a female who is strong, powerful and a fighter, this breaks the stereotype of an innocent, weak female character. Similarly, for our thriller we have chosen to have a female antagonist as it challenges the stereotype and makes our idea appear more unique and individual. Also, using a dominant female may appeal more to our target audience as it would be more interesting to watch.
