EVALUATION ACTIVITY 5
We were not able to apply all these conventions in just the opening due to the duration and it would be too much to add all these in just the opening of the thriller.
How did you attract/address your audience?
Conventions of a Thriller;
- Protagonist and antagonist
- Trick endings
- Low key lighting is used to create a scary and mysterious atmosphere.
- Montage of shots
- Cliff hangers
- Red herrings - misleading the audience with information
- Tension is very significant when it comes to thrillers.
- Shadows are closely related with low key lighting, they are used to represent a darkness and a scary atmosphere
- Quick cuts
- Changes in the angle of shots
- Diegetic sound of breathing
- Big locations
- Twist and turns
- Black and white are conventions of thrillers. They bring a more dark feel to the movie.
- Mirrors are used in thrillers to show s a reflection of ones soul and inner self. Mirrors represent the darkness within some characters.
Real movie products create public advertisements to catch their audiences attention, for example they realise trailers, create posters and adverts.
I have looked at different types of examples of thriller posters and these ones have inspired me...
Posters and visual advertisement like trailers and adverts are very successful in attracting a specific target audience;
- Catches the attention of the audience that the poster is aimed at.
- It engages them to watch the film.
- Tells them who would star in the film and what the story could revolve around.
- It creates anticipation for the movie release.
- It would result in the audience in sharing about what kind of film it is.
So I have designed some potential posters for our thriller opening that will attract the audience...
Black Background which adds a sense of mystery and
conforms the thriller genre. (Connotations of black; danger, dark, unseen,
suspense, drama)
Black and white- shows the seriousness of the thriller genre
‘UNHINGED’ font is in capital letters and is in white writing which stands out front the dark background of the poster.
Black hoodie blends with the background showing the protagonist at the front and the antagonist following which adds suspense to the audience as the antagonist is disguised and cannot be seen.
‘WILL REVENGE BE THE SOLUTION TO ALL PROBLEMS...?’ is written in red writing which catches the audiences eyes and wants them to be focused.

Social Media
Social media marketing is the process of gaining attention through social media sites.
Social Media marketing programs help to create attention and encourages readers to share it across their social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Therefore I have gone off and created a Facebook page for our thriller and invited people to like it and I put up the poster that I have designed. This will result in our target audience to be aware of the film and the poster will attract them to go and watch the film. Similarly, I have created Twitter and Instagram for our thriller and gained many followers. Social Media marketing has no cost and it's free to advertise any media and grab the audiences attention.
